Emergency kits to provide essentials - a must read

Rotary members in Samoa were on standby as soon as the first effects of the tsunami became clear.
A needs assessment to determine the extent of the damage and what support people needed was carried out by Rotary Apia in collaboration with the Red Cross, other NGOs and support from a New Zealand Emergency Response Assessment Team who flew to Samoa on the first available flight.

Response Kits in Samoa
Working with other agencies to ensure there was no duplicity of effort, Rotary agreed to take responsibility for 500 families in the villages of Aleipata, Saleapaga, Lepa, Falealili and Siumu affected by the Tsunami (approximately 2,400–2,700 people).
Two-hundred and ninety Emergency Response Kits were airlifted to Samoa by Rotary New Zealand. In addition, 60 were sent from the Rotary Fiji depot and 150 from Australian Rotary - a total of 500. The kits provide humanitarian aid such as tarpaulins, blankets, food, homeware, tools, toiletries, medical and education supplies, and miscellaneous items of every description necessary for families and community groups.  Read more ... Editor DG Howard - this is an excellent read to see how Rotary's effort ranks alongside the big NGO's when assisting in the Pacific.  Well done to RNZ World Community Service for their effective advocacy and to the Clubs of 9940 for their ongoing support.
