Welcomes by South Wairarapa Club
Huw & Carolyn Thomas's Tandem100 visit to the South Wairarapa was first marked by a special welcome at Featherston by our Rotary cyclists and a noisy Fire Engine, at 2pm on Sunday afternoon (Feb 13).  This finely attired group (with Fire Engine!) then headed North towards the Left Bank Cafe, just on the Northern outskirts of Greytown, where we had erected a Shelterbox tent and placed a display of the contents of the Shelterbox for the good public of South Wairarapa to view.  We also had an ERK on display, and had Rotarians in attendance from 10am - 4pm to field questions from the public about Shelterbox, ERK's and Rotary's role in the Shelterbox programme; and a dvd of Huw & Carolyn's exploits and examples of how Shelterbox is used world-wide on constant display inside the cafe throughout the day.  At 6pm, we held a joint Rotary meeting at the Left Bank Cafe with Carterton and Masterton South, along with a number of guests including Warren Irving (our District's Shelterbox Coordinator), in honour of Huw & Carolyn, where they were our guest speakers.  The evening was a brilliant success, where all 3 clubs made donations and pledges to Shelterbox and ERK's, and was all due to the hard work done by PP Tony Waygood, along with quite a bit of help from members of our club.  Tony hosted Huw & Carolyn overnight, and then escorted them the following day on their way North. Huw & Carolyn later stopped off to talk with the Wairarapa Times Age as they rode through Masterton on their way North to Pahiatua yesterday morning.  Huw & Carolyn did a fabulous job promoting Shelterbox, but a special "thank you" must go to Tony Waygood for the hard yards he put in organising the event (and the hard yards as the lead of the cycling escort!!).  A good day for Rotary and Shelterbox.
