Check out the last for 2010

Keep up to date - this publication is always available from the RI Web site or by clicking on the link on the right hand side of this Blog.

Also check out the latest news here:

The RI Board agreed at its November meeting to phase out the World Community Service and Rotary Volunteers programs, effective 30 June 2011. This decision was made in light of the priorities of the revised RI Strategic Plan and the need for an overall shift in how Rotary International administers its programs, moving to a “resource and support” model. The goal of the new model is to expand resources in a way that helps clubs connect and partner with greater ease, leading to an increase in the number and scope of significant international service projects.

RI staff will be developing and enhancing resources to foster connections for international service projects, fellowship visits, and international volunteer opportunities. This will include augmenting the current Rotary Friendship Exchange program.

Goal setters on the final leg

Isn't it amazing how setting a goal makes things happen?  Our two intrepid riders have done just that.  When you read this message, Xaver and Ollie will be on the last leg of their amazing 'Journey of Hope'.  The vision, the drive, the passion and energy are admirable.  But then, without the backing and support of you all, their journey would not have been so rewarding.
It's been amazing how Clubs, Rotarians and non-Rotarians have rallied around our riders as they have passed through the various townships.  Hospitality has been shown and the generosity of the giving has resulted currently in more that $30,000 towards the Polio.  In 2011 we (i.e. Rotarians from around the world) will meet our international challenge to raise $200Million to match the $355Million donated by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
It is good to see the involvement in the bike ride by local politicians and Mayors who have also hopped on their own bike to support Xaver and Ollie.

So in summary a goal was set and we now have the result.  The challenge for us at the start of 2011 is to set our own audacious, hairy and scary goals to ensure we also achieve great things as we work to build communities and bridge continents.

Have a great year - sharpen your pencils and start setting those goals.

Journey of Hope - TV report!!

DG Margaret's message - but then this!

The attached message of gratitude was sent by DG Mararet of District 9970 to those Clubs and individuals who had contributed to the support of the Canterbury community.  And then on Boxing Day another quake stuck causing further major damage and unsettled the community once again.  They have struggled to put the 7.1 shake on 4 September behind them and then this....

On 14 December DG Margaret wrote:
Thank you very much for your sympathy and support displayed through messages, practical actions, and donations since the Canterbury Earthquake. The support so willingly given remains our lifeline as we work to assist the many people who have lost homes, had their homes severely damaged, lost businesses or are struggling to keep businesses going when there is devastation nearby impeding the progress and access.

It is a truly testing time for us all with the continuing after-shocks as well which we hope are now lessening in frequency and power. Our blessings have been our many friends and neighbours, the timing of the major earthquake which ensured there was no loss of life and the beautiful sunny days that have been a pattern since.

In material terms there has undoubtedly been a great deal of damage. The bulk of major city buildings and homes have stood up very well. It is the destruction of the infra-structure - sewers, roads, bridges, water pipes etc and the liquefaction of land which will take a long time to repair. As you will be aware the response of the government, both local and national, has been encouragingly competent, swift and comprehensive. Certain areas of the city have been very hard hit, others have received little or no damage. It has been so random, and the randomness has been upsetting in itself. The process of now moving through the next stage of recovery has of necessity been slower that many would have liked as careful planning and innovative solutions are required.

Offers of help and assistance from many caring people outside the Earthquake Zone have enabled families to take a break from the reality of changed lives, have provided housing, clothing, warehousing and personal effects. Each of these has been gratefully received.

Your donations have contributed to the Rotary New Zealand Canterbury Earthquake Appeal which has established a committee to ascertain the best way to apportion the funds. Following extensive investigation the Appeal Committee has identified that early next year not only will the pain of the reality of readjustment be really biting, but that aspects now unseen will emerge.  Some will relate to children starting at new schools, parents travelling to new job locations, and older people having enough of stoically carrying on as they always have. A proportion of the generous donations in hand will be reserved for relevant responses then.

Larger projects that meet community needs but may not be eligible for other funding are also being considered eg the redevelopment of community facilities which have been destroyed or badly damaged.

The questioning that committee members have been doing has raised expectations and it has been decided that some response should be made prior to Christmas. Through recommendations made by major church social service organisations, along with the east Christchurch based Supergrans, gifts of Rotary Christmas Puddings will be made.  Puddings have been gifted to these organisations who will disburse them to the families they know who have been severely inconvenienced by the September earthquake.  They will know that Rotary stands with them.

Throughout this time your generosity has sustained and strengthened us all. Please accept our very sincere appreciation with best wishes for the New Year.

Community Service Award - Feilding Rotarian

Recent news article states:

Manawatu District Mayor Ian McKelvie presented three Manawatu District Community Honours Awards at a ceremony in Feilding last Thursday.
The annual council-sponsored awards recognise significant contributions to the community by individuals or groups, and nominees must have carried out meritorious service in the fields of community service, welfare, sport, culture, the arts, recreation or education.
The awards were initiated in 1991 and 65 district residents have been honoured over the intervening years.

This year's recipients are Pat Ashton, Eric Brew and Ivan Mandahl

Ivan Mandahl
A dedicated 50-year service to Rotary as a member of the Feilding Rotary Club has enabled photographer Ivan Mandahl to spread the word about the community in which he has lived and worked all his life, far and wide and earn recognition at the highest level.
Among the many outstanding projects in which Mr Mandahl has been involved was a multi-lingual slide programme sent to a number of countries highlighting the activities of Rotary in Feilding and the district's various industries. The response was amazing with many of the overseas clubs circulating the programme among members. Mr Mandahl set up a sound-slide presentation using four projectors, sound equipment and two large screens that featured photographs of overseas travel, complete with music and sound effects.
Donations from viewers went into a Rotary fund to establish student exchanges.
He also initiated a programme to help 19 Chinese-Malaysian children receive education at Feilding High School and Massey University.
All the students returned home with agricultural and/or horticultural honours and forged successful careers. Assisting abandoned half-caste Portuguese children in Malaysia to receive books and schooling was another Ivan Mandahl-driven initiative that proved extremely beneficial, many of these "outcasts" earning high level qualifications and positions and the local Rotary club taking over the programme.
His community involvement also encompasses 32 years as secretary/treasurer of the Patriotic Council in the Lower North Island, founding member of the Feilding Camera Club and regional chairman for the Professional Photographers Association. He was also the first Feilding Rotary Club member to receive the prestigious Paul Harris Fellowship.
Mr Mandahl's work as a Rotarian and for the community at large is immeasurable.
It was with regret he was unable to share the award with his wife Blanche who died this month.

Have a great Christmas everybody!

Jenny and I would love to wish you all a very enjoyable Christmas and a relaxing Kiwi New Year.

We have really enjoyed our first 6 months and look forward to another fulfilling period as District Governor for District 9940 through until June.

We have a great District and there is so much good work done by Clubs in so many different ways.  I would only wish every Rotarian had the privilege Jenny and I have had to be welcomed into Clubs and to be shown the myriad of different activities Clubs are involved in.  We certainly help build communities to make them a better place.

Jenny and I will be resting and enjoying time with family and friends.  In early February we will be going down South to walk the Routbourne and Greenstone tracks.  After our District Conference in March we will be attending International Convention in May in New Orleans.  We will then be popping over to London to see our first grandchild – young Oliver. Jenny can't wait!!!!

Be safe and happy

Howard & Jenny

Civic Reception marks the end of Stage 1

Mayor Celia with Xaver, President Tony (Tawa)
and Ollie
It was a very wet group of cyclists that trundled into Civic Square pretty much to cue at 3pm this afternoon - and the sun decided to shine and the rain stopped.  Mayor Celia Wade-Brown and Trevor Mallard accompanied the lads as they cycled in to meet a small group of enthusiastic supporters.  Good to see PDG Tony there along with AG Glynis and Fred, President Tony (Tawa) and President Colleen (Wellington) plus others.  Jim Greenough (Wellington South) was there too with video camera in tow!  Looking slightly lost in the expanse of Civic Square we were invited inside to the Mayor's reception for a coffee and the exchange of a few words.
Dirt Merchants to the rescue
There are two fantastic ambassadors who tomorrow hop on the ferry to Picton to start they South Island leg.
Some running repairs were completed on their bikes as we met thanks to James Duncan Dirt Merchants.

Fantastic effort Pencarrow

President John reports:

"...we are pleased to report RC Pencarrow will be writing out a cheque for
$5,132
towards the boys effort.

A big thanks to all fellow Presies and rotarians who contributed to making this a record night for the boys and Polio Plus.
President John in full flight!

The boys had a massive feast at our place this morning and are beaming from ear to ear after their PHF's (and whitebait fritters, bacon, black pudd, omelets,) and all the rest. They grinned like cheshire cats when I gave them the final tally."

Christmas - a wonderful season

Just wanted to share my story from Christmas Gift Wrapping. A man and young boy came to get their presents wrapped and I got talking to them asking what they were doing etc for Christmas. Then the guy asked "Do you get paid well for this job"  I told him a little bit about Rotary and that we were a voluntary organisation etc and as a part of that we raise fund to help with community projects. I told him this year we were helping with resources in the local schools like books and things. The little boy said with a big smile on his face "like this year I got a dictionary from you guy's" I said yes that is what we are buying more of so more children can have one. I asked him what he thought of his dictionary and he said it was great and he loved it. As they left the father said "sweet" and they wished me a merry Christmas and off they went.
Just thought you might like to know how proud this little boy was of his dictionary and that it is all worth while.
Have a good Christmas see you in the New Year.

Cheers
Bronwyn (RC of Porirua Sundown)

The Power of Two!

Xaver, DG Howard, Ollie
With a vision, with a goal, with energy and with a passion second to none, Xaver and Ollie have made Wellington.  Half way to their goal and with over $30,000 towards their target of $100,000.  Tonight alone raised over $4,000!!!!!

Here are two young men who are giving above self, raising money to fight Polio and inspiring others at the same time.

Tonight we were invited to attend the Pitstop at Eastbourne and hosted by the Club of Pencarrow for a BBQ and auction.  Over 80 braved the drizzle, enjoyed each others company and celebrated with our two riding ambassadors.
Ron Hunter - Eastern Hutt and local the local Constable
The local Presidents turned out in force - President Dennis (Stokes Valley) President Deane (Easter Hutt) President Pam (Petone) President Pierre (Wainuiomata) President Colleen (Wellington) President Ian (Mt Victoria) President Carl (Hutt Valley) and of course President John (Pencarrow) - along with AG Mark, Projects Chair
Kevin and IDRFC John Cole.  Along with other Rotarians and partners.  A great turn out supporting Xaver and Ollie.

The power of two making their Actions Count!
