Japan with Shelterboxes

Lyndon (RC of Marton) spoke of his two weeks in Japan following the Earthquake and Tsunami.
He related the situation to what would have happened if it had happened in our part of the North Island. The area affected would have been from Wellington to Raglan. The settlements Turakina, Scott’s Ferry and Tangimoana, would each have had a population about the size of Fielding or Marton and if we had been residents, half of us would have been killed. Being inland may not have been much help as the wave would have come up the Rangitikei River as far as Bulls. Driving a car to escape probably would not have helped as the roads would have been congested by others doing the same.
It was Rotarians that provided the key personnel to assist Lyndon and his team to get the help to where it was needed. The character of the Japanese people has meant that the rebuild will be done very quickly compared to disasters in other parts of the world.
